Absence of the Presence

Azizullah Hazara

Kabul, Afghanistan

Trained as a traditional calligrapher and a miniature artist, I have been combining photography and performance with calligraphy. The nature of the text I use changes formally, as it becomes more sculptural, thus involving body in a more profound manner. The body, the text and the traditional training thus becomes active elements of my work.

My work in its conceptual framework takes a critical stand on historical truth, how such truth is generated, and how such generation of truth creates as well as buries alternate histories. The result is a continuous overlap between calligraphy, photography, video and body in order to speak of tradition, representation, and the site of representation in a critical manner.
