by Belarus artist Alena Halavina,

now that her country is facing one of the biggest political crises in its history.

After the last elections which where (as usual) unfair, thousands of people came out on the streets in all the cities in the country.

However, peaceful protesters faced unacceptable violence from the state.

More than 7000 were detained and tortured, several killed and dozens are not found.

People continue going out on the streets and workers organized strikes all over the country.

The main people’s demands are: resignation of the current president, having new fair elections, letting all the political prisoners free.

Although the works were originally created during the Covid pandemic,

representing the artist's view on life when staying at home in lockdown,

their ruptures, cracks as well as hopes for change now reflects the situations in the country more than ever.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

My artworks are reflexion on the things happening in and around me. I work
mainly with topics of everydayness and try to find beauty in things
that surround me.
I think that the more ordinary something is, the more
special it is. Making art is like keeping
a diary for me. With every project I try
to tell a personal story. I use different media,
although give preference to photography.
