Carley F. Smith is an interdisciplinary American artist currently residing in Victoria, British Columbia. Spending time exploring the remote, high-mountain, and unsettled areas of western North America, her artistic practice is inspired and ruled by the systems and laws of the natural world. Smith’s material choices inculde venetian blinds, fabric, and plastic tables cloths -- all maleable, soft and floppy matter. The chosen material, playful and artificially colorful, often displays its most natural state or tendency, as they are subject to gravity, air currents, or motion. By enlivening her objects with energy, Smith interrupts perceptions of inherent personalities and how conceptions of time lead to awareness in an animated environment. Smith is an MFA candidate at the University of Victoria. She received her BFA from Montana State University-Bozeman in Sculpture.
