'What They Hide'

from the series 'Cheekh'

'Cheekh' translates to 'scream' in Urdu. This series, as an artist - is my cry to society. Women

are often regarded as symbols of beauty and grace, often hiding some horrifying and ugly realities.

These works focus on the coexistence of the sacred and profane in our lives.

They are a representation of the duality that exists in nature.

Women all over the world receive intentional inflictions of emotional and physical distress,

which often leads to the loss of their families, dignity, and honor,

and some times even to mental asylums.

I try to convey awareness as well as a sense of hope.

'Cheekh' gives a voice to hidden social norms.

I take photographs because of the details it helps to unfold

  – obscuring and revealing in layers, creating that push and pull for the viewer.

I physically manipulate and damage my precious 35mm film negatives in non-traditional ways, scratches that appear as scars on the photographic prints.

The nudity, closeness, veil on the model, and intentional markings amplify the feeling

of uncertainty and spirituality as well as anger and pain.
