Shadows

Sabahat Nisar

Lahore Pakistan

All these works have been realized without brushes.

Sabahat has applied paint on canvas with her fingers, to convert her feelings into the paintings, and thus obtaining magical effects with the soft touches of the fingers.

She might be the only artist in Pakistan who still does her paintings with fingers.

My works consist of installation and new media around the themes of shadow,

sound and space. By changing the visual appearance of readymade objects, my work transforms the ordinary perspective of viewers into a different form of perception.

Shadows always cover a particular space in silence and can take on any form,

but we do not give them enough importance. We can never eliminate shadow and sound from our lives. With the motion of life we come across various ways of thinking, memories, events, etc., but we can't erase their essence. We carry them to the last day of our lives, so I think that here shadow represents the essence of all of those things.

Shadow is not always black. It always has a color. Nature knows the only color, white and black are not colors. Shadows do not remain the same and constant. They move according to time and light and appear according to the intensity of light. The painting was done with fingers.

In this work ,I have rearranged the shadow of two figures in three dimensional space and have provided dimension to a flat shadow by choosing some burned woods as medium. With the help of a sound system I have used some chaos. We can't never eliminate shadow and sound from our lives. With the motion of life we come across various thinking, memorys, some events etc. But we can't erase the gist of that events. We carry those till the last day of our life. So, I think here shadow is the gist of everything.

In this painting, you can easily compare the clear shadow shape of child beggar at the base of the road with the soft abstract shadow shape of the tree foliage. The painting was done with fingers.
